Sow your lettuce instantly and accurately
Days to Maturity: 45
All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 1985
Love fresh lettuce but could live without the business of measuring rows, thinning young seedlings, and generally keeping up with the whole project. If so, this Red Sails Lettuce Seed is the answer to your hopes. You literally lay it down on top of the soil where you want the plants to grow, cutting it to fit the space and arranging it in any pattern you like. Then rake or sprinkle about a half inch of soil on top of the tape and water it in well. That’s it—in a few weeks you’ll see evenly-spaced, healthy green shoots that need no thinning.
Red Sails Lettuce is an award-winning lettuce that finishes in just 45 days. Prized for its beauty as well as its flavor, Red Sails received an AAS when it was introduced—and has never looked back. Among the very first to arise, it resists bolting, giving you an especially long season of delectable eating.
The large, erect leaves are deep red at the ruffled tips, shading into a bronzy-maroon and finally becoming green toward the base. A great source of rich color for the salad bowl, they are high-quality eating, with a soft texture and buttery flavor that appeals to all ages.
Lettuce thrives in cold weather and can be sown directly into the garden, starting in early spring. For an even earlier harvest, sow indoors; the seedlings don’t mind transplanting. If a fall crop is desired, begin in late summer. Grow in garden or containers.
